Jackson, Mississippi – Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Epsilon Lambda Chapter, Educational Activities Committee present Martin Luther King, Jr. Month of Service Events in honor of the life and legacy of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. with events and activities to be held on MLK Day 2023, Monday, January 16, and throughout the month.
Observed on the third Monday of January each year, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a federal holiday in the United States marking the day of King's birthday on January 15, 1929.
The week will kick off on Sunday, January 15 | 4:00pm, with “Thermostat or Thermometer?: The Church’s Role in Social Transformation Since King’s Letter from Birmingham Jail”. This event will be held at Mt. Helm Baptist Church located at 300 E Church St Jackson MS 39202. The panel members include: Rev. Dr. K. Jason Coker, National Director of Together for Hope, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship; Brother Dr. Reginald Buckley, Senior Pastor of Cade Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, and Bro. Dr. C. J. Rhodes, Pastor of Mt. Helm Baptist Church.
On Monday, January 16 | 1:00pm, members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will participate in the National Pan-Hellenic Council Community Day of Service. This event will take place at City Plaza located at 2640 Terry Road, Jackson MS 39204. During this event, The NPHC will collect and deliver canned goods, warm coats and accessories, and paper goods to Stewpot, Billy Brumfield’s Man Shelter and various senior living facilities throughout the City of Jackson.
We will culminate this series of MLK 2023 service events on Monday, January 16 | 5:00pm with “A Call To Conscience: Let Us Be Dissatisfied”. Sponsored by Millsaps College & Tougaloo College, Brother Dr. C. J. Rhodes will lead this community conversation. This event will be held on the campus of Millsaps College, Selby & Richard McRae Christian Center, Yates Chapel at 1701 N. State Street, Jackson MS, 39210
All of these events are FREE and open to the public.
Not only will these events allow us to show up in solidarity to honor King's legacy of nonviolence and unity, but they also provide us with an opportunity to serve and uplift each other.
