Alpha Mentoring Program - Uniting and Preparing
Through community service projects, college tours, mental and physical health workshops, this mentoring program works to ensure young males will be equipped to take on the challenges of the present and future
Program Background
Alpha Mentoring Program-Uniting and Preparing (AMP-UP) is a mentoring program designed for middle and high school aged males in Jackson Public Schools (JPS). The program began in 2013 at Kirksey Middle School, as a small cultural enrichment and mentoring program. Today, the program has expanded to include all middle and high school students in the Jackson Public Schools (JPS) District. Through its growth and partnerships, AMP-UP now offers college scholarships, college tours, literacy development, and community service projects. The purpose of this mentoring program is to help young men develop into educated men, community leaders, critical thinkers, problem solvers, community servants, trailblazers, and advocates for social justice, equality, and equity. This distinctive and remarkable mentoring program is supported, sponsored, created, and managed by both college and alumni members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated in Jackson, Mississippi.
Program Structure
AMP-UP Alpha Mentoring Program, through student led initiatives, is intentionally designed to:

EMPOWER
AMP-UP Empowers young men to conduct research, discuss, and dialogue about current topics and/or injustices that plague their communities on the local, state, national, and global platforms

AMP-UP engages young men in in critical thinking and problem solving skills
3STRATEGIZE
- AMP-UP empowers young men to strategize and plan community service projects to help their community
4DEVELOP
This Alpha Mentoring Program is designed to help young men develop better literacy skills through book studies and monthly group discussions
5BECOME
This Alpha Mentoring Program works to help young men become knowledgeable and resourceful leaders in their schools and communities.
Program Objective
The overall objective of AMP-UP is to provide male JPS students with unique opportunities for student achievement and educational empowerment. Through mentorship and leadership development from industry experts, participants will be exposed to financial literacy, academic and career advisement, ACT and SAT test preparation, sex education, critical race theory, Black empowerment and liberation movements, entrepreneurship development, politics & citizenship, social problems (poverty, global warming, literacy, etc..) and social responsibility, ethics, and critical thinking skills.
AMP-UP also provides cultural and historical development to participating young males. Through community service projects, college tours, mental and physical health workshops, this mentoring program works to ensure young males will be equipped to take on the challenges of the present and future.
What We Do
AMP-UP Online is an academic and leadership portal designed to supplement and reinforce mentorship provided. Learning is divided into the following modules:
Leadership
The AMP UP Leadership Module provides an introduction to core leadership theory through unique individual and group activities. During this session, not only will participants have an opportunity to learn more about themselves, but they will also develop skills necessary for better communication with their peers in class, in sports and activities, and with family and friends.
Financial Literacy
During this module, participants will be provided the financial literacy and money management education needed to improve the financial education early in life to set the foundations of lifelong learning. This session teaches participants money basics—budgeting, checking and savings; power of credit, and investments.
Entrepreneurship
During this module, participants will be introduced to a broad concept of entrepreneurship. They will develop business ideas, learn basic business vocabulary, write business plans, discuss and practice marketing, and learn ethical business practices needed to effectively engage their customers and communities. AMP UP will allow students the opportunity to network with local business leaders to learn first-hand about entrepreneurship and will be exposed to mentoring and real-world leadership opportunities.
A Voteless People is a Hopeless People & Social Justice
During this module, AMP UP Alpha Mentoring Program Participants will be taught how to navigate life and create reform based on their authentic ideas about social justice. Participants will learn how to be positive advocates for change and empowered to be self-valued leaders and citizens of their communities. This module will explore topics about social justice; Politics and Citizenship; Equity vs Equality; and Creating inclusive communities.
Project Alpha/ Health & Wellness Advocacy
During this Module, AMP UP Alpha Mentoring Program Participants will be guided through practical ways to make informed decisions about Drinking & Driving, Seatbelt Safety, and Sex Education. Helping adolescents make responsible decisions about their health, safety, and sexual activity is key in developing well rounded, culturally responsive citizens – thus, decreasing the likelihood and frequency of unprotected sex while also decreasing the number of teen fatalities on highways do to impaired driving and lack of seatbelt use.
ACT Preparation & College Readiness
During this ongoing module, AMP UP Alpha Mentoring Program Participants will participate in a structured, ACT Test preparation. Using a proven mix of in-center instruction, independent learning, online resources, and ACT practice tests, teens will raise score with confidence.
This cohesive approach ensures that participants will learn the strategies to tackle each type of exam question (including the ACT Writing Test). In addition, each AMP UP Mentee can focus on specific skill areas that need improvement.
Canon-Dozier Project
The Cannon/Dozier Project, a service project advocating drunk driving awareness.
Participants will have experiential learning opportunities during special outings which include college tours, cultural museums & enrichment venues, career development site visits (courtrooms, factories, business offices, hospitals, etc..), and social outings.
